Description
FREEPORT, Ill., March 12, 2019 — The Stephenson County Historical Society is presenting a slideshow, “Looking Back at the Streets of Freeport 1900-1980,” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 27 at the Freeport Public Library. The presentation is being co-sponsored by Freeport Public Library and the Freeport Public Library Foundation. Historical Society Executive Director Sharon Welton will present the show. More than 1,500 historical slides from the Historical Society and the Library collections were digitized through a grant from the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois. The first group of slides depict images of Freeport from the turn of the twentieth century. The second group of images date from 1970 to 1980 and are attributed to then-Freeport Library Director John Locascio. Sets of the digitized slides will be available at the Library’s Frances Woodhouse Local History Room and at the Stephenson County Historical Society’s resource library. The March 27 slideshow will consist of select images from the collection and compare city views from 1900 through 1980. Historical Society Director Welton will invite comments and looks forward to memories and information from the audience. The program is free and open to the public. The Freeport Public Library is located at 100 E. Douglas Street in Freeport. Refreshments are courtesy of the Freeport Library Foundation.
