Description
I Am American Curated by Sergio Gomez March 1st through April 13th, 2019 Opening Reception: Friday, March 8th, 5-8 pm I Am American presents multiple perspectives on immigration and ethnicity. Using a variety of styles, each work provides a wide angle view into the bi-cultural experience. Some participating artists are first, second, or third generation immigrants while others can trace their heritage back to the Native Americans. This exhibition about the American experience provides ample room for conversations and personal interpretation and explores what it truly means to be “American”. Special Program Saturday, March 16th 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, multi-media artist Pia Cruzalegui will document Freeport’s American Story through a special photo shoot open to the entire community. During the photo shoot the artist will ask each individual or family to share a story of their heritage in an informal setting. The artist will later produce a short film capturing the highlights of the stories. Each participant will receive a free digital image and can select an 8 x 10 print for $5.00, if desired. Register below to tell your story. This exhibition is part of the programming for the 2019 Big Read Freeport, supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Freeport Public Library Foundation and the Freeport chapter of the Rotary International. NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.
