Description
Spring Break Gardening is planned for Saturday, March 16, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. The event is being held at the CTE Academy, 950 US HWY 20 W. Elizabeth, IL. A $20 registration fee covers refreshments, lunch and program materials. The hands-on breakout sessions, Hypertufa Pot or Rain Barrel, require an additional fee to cover materials for the project. Starting out the day will be the keynote address given by Peggy Doty, Extension Educator, titled The People and Nature Perspective. During her presentation Peggy will discuss how a gardener has the divine ability to create or destroy his or her piece of Earth. It is a heavy weight to bare when you realize the fate of the world’s natural existence has a direct relationship to the choices we make in our yard. The future of our own food chain depends on the gardener’s ability to co-exist with all things nature and to help reconstruct the food web in their own backyard. Peggy will share information on how to best carry through and make good choices to protect nature through gardening. Following the keynote address there will be several breakout sessions on topics that include Construction and Maintenance of Rain Barrels, Composting in the Home Garden, Hypertufa Pots, Backyard Orchards, Seed Saving and Seed Starting, and Holistic Approach to Healthy Soils. The Jo Daviess County Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists and will answer questions and provide information on the volunteer programs A silent auction to raise funds for various volunteer projects will be held during Spring Break Gardening. Bidding will open at 8:30 and will close at 2:05. Silent auction items will include a monarch house, a bat house, set of metal plant stands, handmade duck and turtle decoys, a hypertufa planter, food prep machine, Black & Decker handy juicer, food strainer and sauce maker, cherry stoner, 5 qt. aluminum pressure canner.
